Celebrating Summer Solstice & Salmon!

Finnriver, North Olympic Salmon Coalition and the Marine Science Center invite you to an all-ages educational celebration of salmon!


Inspired by the long-standing traditions of local communities in honoring the salmon lifecycle, Finnriver, NOSC and MSC have joined together to offer three days of all-ages educational fun. Join us forSalmon Hats & Trivia Night, playtime inFin the Salmon, anOrca-themed children's book reading,Salmon Shorts Movie Night,educational salmon crafts, and an all-ages Salmon Dance Party with DJ Lunch Lady!


All events are open to the public with sliding-scale donations that benefit salmon and marine education on the Peninsula as well as Chimacum Tribal Services.

Salmon Hat & Trivia Night

Thursday, June 22nd

4-6PM: Make your own Salmon Hat!

6-8PM: Salmon Team Trivia


Join NOSC and the PTMSC at Finnriver in an all-ages night of salmon craft and ecosystem trivia! From 4-6pm, NOSC leads the crowd in their wonderfully wacky tradition of salmon-hat making (materials provided). At 6pm, the Marine Science Center and NOSC takes the stage for Salmon (and related ecosystems) Trivia Night! Bring your best salmon-and-ecosystem trivia team to make and wear Salmon Hats while racing upstream to beat other teams!


Prizes for best in show (both trivia and hats). $5-$20 (sliding scale) to enter a team in trivia night, but free for teams whose members are ALL wearing salmon hats! All proceeds benefit salmon and marine education on the Peninsula as well as Chimacum Tribal Services.

SALMON MOVIE SHORTS

FRIDAY, JUNE 23

SHOWTIMES 6PM & 7:15P


Join NOSC and PTMSC for a night of beautifully filmed movie shorts about the salmon ecosystem, with NOSC folks present to discuss issues raised in each short, with screenings at 6pm and 7:15pm. Tickets on a sliding scale from $1-$25 dollars, with all proceeds benefiting salmon and marine education on the Peninsula as well as Chimacum Tribal Services.

Meet Fin the Fish!

The beloved Coho salmon who winters at Finnriver is making her grand appearance!
Kids can play in Fin in the Finnriver field on the following dates and times:

Join young readers' book author Nora Nickum in the Finnriver field for an interactive reading and signing of her photo-illustrated book,Superpod: Saving the Endangered Orcas of the Pacific Northwest. 


Nora's books will also be for sale and are geared towards readers ages 8 and up.

Book Summary:

The endangered Southern Resident orcas whistle and click their way around the waters of the Pacific Northwest in three small family groups. Superpod introduces young readers to these playful and beloved whales, and to experts who are training scat-sniffing dogs, inventing ways to treat sick orcas, quieting the waters, studying whales from the air, and speaking out.

 

Author Nora Nickum shares stories about these endangered whales and the process of making the book, introduce us to individual orcas like Moby and Kiki, and talk about fascinating things scientists are learning as well how we can all take action to help the orcas.


About the Author:


Nora Nickum leads ocean conservation policy work for the Seattle Aquarium, and also writes books and magazine articles for kids and teens. She is the author of Superpod: Saving the Endangered Orcas of the Pacific Northwest, published this spring by Chicago Review Press. Nora lives with her family on Bainbridge Island, WA.

& Dance Party!

Join us on the field on the final day of Solstice Salmon Days for Salmon-themed fun!


CRAFTS

The Marine Science Center will lead participants in creating paper salmon and salmon windsocks.


DANCE PARTY

DJ Lunch Lady will also be spinning all-ages danceable favorites in the field!


EXPLORE FIN THE FISH

NOSC will be hosting Fin the Salmon in the field for those who want to take a peek inside her painted belly.


Sliding scale $3-5 per person, no one turned away for lack of funds.
