I have a dear friend and cherished mentor whose illness has become more aggressive recently and I wanted to offer her my attention and love from the farm.  I thought to send her ‘moments’ that I spent still this Spring, witnessing the world around me and wondering at this precious life.  I tried to express these moments in haiku, offered here with great love and gratitude for my friend Julie and for the opportunity to watch another sweet Spring arise upon the Earth.

I have always loved trees; have always found them to be honorable role models and comforting neighbors.  And for 8 years now, since I did my first research on old European agricultural and orchard festival traditions, I have been inspired to Wassail the apple trees in our orchard at Finnriver each winter.

On this merry Christmas morning, after the kids gorged on gifts and games, we all walked down to the creek to see if we could see a salmon.  ‘Tis the season of the Coho-ho-ho migration and catching sight of a fish always makes us feel proud and gratified, even though we are not of the Oncorhynchus ourselves. The anticipation is like waiting for a friend at the end of an ultra aqua marathon; it’s called a salmon ‘run’ after all. And here at the upstream end of the course, one experiences a wave of empathetic relief and joy that the finish line is in sight.  With salmon, this is tempered by the poignant fact that the ‘finish line’ is truly the fish’s finish.
