As I do each morning, I pull aside the checkered curtain in the bedroom and look out the window. My first glance outside each day offers a green view into the boughs of the magnificent old fir we call "grandmother tree." Between the feathered fir needles, if there is a breeze, I can catch glimpses of sky. For me, the sky can make or break my mood; for the farm, the weather can make or break a season.

A semi truck rumbles down the road one early Spring morning and my boys, alert to the sounds of heavy equipment, press their noses to the window, riveted by the sheer noise and motion of the thing. We hold our breath as this vehicular behemoth crosses the little bridge over the creek (relieved when the beams hold steady) and then our youngest son dashes to the door to put on his boots. For the kids, it's time to play in the sawdust. For the farmers, it's all about the mulch.
